How to remove inverted comma (') before a number in excel ?

i am populating srting values in excel using jxl...when numerical values appear in the cells an inverted comma comes in the beginning...eg: '1223 instead of 1223...i need to remove this comma for finding sum....pls hellppppp !!!!!!!!!!!!
