North American PS3 playing Region 3 DVD ?

I accidentally put a Region 3 DVD in my North American PS3 and it actually played the DVD. The only reason I can think of is that the encoding of the DVD was not correct. Does anybody else have any reasons as to why this could have happened and if I can actually play a Region 3 DVD on my PS3?
