What will work better for me in the gym? if i do to many repetitions or less repetition with more weight?

my husband wants me to do more weight. i just try to lose weight and learn to do regular push-ups. what give me fastest result? I do elliptical too. but my concern is way is so difficult for me to do push-ups. i am 45 years old, 165 pounds
