I am having problems with my Ipod?

When i plug my Ipod into the computer it starts charging but Itunes doest register that anything is pluged in. Before when i would plug my Ipod in it would say do not disconnect, and then it would start syncing, now it just starts charging and it doesn't say any thing. What do i do?
